Standard Chartered marathon winners to receive prize money

The Standard Chartered Bank has assured all athletes who won prize money in the 42km and 21km races during the 2015 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon that they will receive their pay, responding to claims that the money has since been misappropriated.

Speaking in Nairobi, Standard Chartered Kenya and East Africa’s CEO, Lamin Manjang, said they will pay the athletes immediately the full official doping results are released by Athletics Kenya (AK).

“They (AK) promised us last week that they would hasten the process after receiving partial results from the laboratories in South Africa,” Manjang told Citizen Digital.

“As the title sponsor, we are supposed to adhere to the IAAF regulations, which require that we pay our athletes their money after doping results have been released.”

The delay has since stirred mixed reactions between both athletes and their officials, with many of them raising questions as to whether the money had been misappropriated.

Lamin lamented that the doping results had taken too long before their release hence the misunderstanding.

“By last week, AK promised us that a lot of progress has been made with partial results having been received from the laboratory in South Africa. We are hopeful that they will comply before the launch of the 2016 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon in May,” he concluded.

As the 2016 marathon approaches, Lamin called upon the AK to ensure issues that led to the delay in the release of the 2015 results are addressed in good time.

Standard chartered has now been associated with the Nairobi Marathon for the past 13 years and is still steering to achieve its goals as a partnership company.
