Starlets begin preps for E. Guinea AWCON test

The national women football team has reported to camp at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos ahead of their forthcoming Africa Women Cup of Nations Qualifier against Equatorial Guinea.

Team Manager Mike Kamure all the 26 players that were called up are already at the camp as Starlets prepare to host Equatorial Guinea for the first leg on June 6 before travelling to the Central African state three days later where the aggregate winner will book a ticket to the AWCON finals in Ghana.

The David Ouma coached side sailed through to the second round of the Qualifiers after edging out Uganda 1-0 on aggregate in April.

“The girls have reported to the camp today at Machakos where they will hold light training in the evening. However from tomorrow they will have two session morning and evening which will run till June 5.

“We don’t know a lot about our opponents Equatorial Guinea but we understand it’s not an easy team to beat but despite all I believe the girls will give it to their best to ensure we qualify for the continental assignment in November,” Kamure told Citizen Digital.

Lilian Awuor who plays for the Kenyan women premier league champions Vihiga Queens together with her colleague Teresha Engesha, Janet Bundi of Eldoret Falcons and Anita Adongo from Oserian Ladies are the new faces in the team.

Starlets had intensified their preparation ahead of the third edition of the Cecafa women championship which was to be held in Kigali Rwanda from May 11–22 but Rwanda Football Federation, FERWAFA, postponed it due to unavailability of hosting funds initially meant to be sent to Rwanda FA by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).

The second leg match will be staged on 9th June 2018 in Malabo where the aggregate winner will qualify for the 11th edition of the Africa Women Cuo Of Nations to be held in Ghana from from 17th November to 1st December 2018.
