Starlets coach Ouma opts for grassroots for fresh talents

Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma has promised to scout for more talents from the grassroots with a view of roping them to the national football team.

Speaking after witnessing the launch of a women’s football league in Mwala spearheaded by nominated Machakos County MCA Angela Munyasya, Ouma said that FKF has made major milestones in women football development since there are at least eight Harambee Starlets players plying their European leagues.

According to Ouma, the milestone is proof enough of the serious efforts the federation is putting to improve the state of women football.

Ouma also hailed the quality of Mwala Sub-County League noting that he has identified around seven players with the potential of joining the national side.

Margaret Omondi who is in charge  of FKF women football in the county, and also  a Fifa  instructor and CAF match commissioner said it was encouraging to see talents from the grassroots offered a chance of  joining the senior side, calling  on leaders to come in handy and support football growth at the grassroots.

FKF Machakos County chairman Noor Abdi said Mwala Sub-County had set the pace with the launch of the tourney, urging other sub-counties to follow suit.

Murithi Nabea, FKF’s head of technical services in Eastern Region – Machakos, Makueni, Kitui,Marsabit, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Isiolo said that this was the first league of its kind in the region, adding that it should be replicated in the rest of the counties.

Nabea reckoned that Kenya has the potential of qualifying for the World Cup Finals in 2023, before the men senior side, but only if talents are tapped early and Coach Ouma accorded the necessary support.

Murithi promised to avail a trophy and Sh 50,000 cash token to the tourney champions.
