Starlets enlist four new faces ahead of Morocco trip

Harambee Starlets have called up four new players as they prepare to depart to Morocco on Wednesday for a series of friendlies ahead of their maiden showing at the CAF Africa Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon (Awcon) next month.

The Cecafa Women Championships beaten finalists reported to camp at Safaricom Stadium in Nairobi on Friday and are eager to travel to Rabat despite the political tensions in Morocco according to assistant head coach, Mary Adhiambo.

She added the new blood had been brought in to boost the options available ahead of naming the final team that will travel to Cameroon for the ten-nation continental showpiece that runs from November 19 to December 3.

“We have beefed up our squad by adding four new players Esther Mandika from Soccer Queens, Janet Moraa from Nyamira Starlets, Betha Omita from Oserian and Pauline Naise from Vihiga Leeds.

“They are good players with the potential to perform and have linked well with the current squad and we will find out where they play best and also if they are ready to participate in the friendlies or the tournament,” she announced.

Team manager Doreen Nabwire says they are still in communication with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) to get the exact dates of the three proposed games with their national side and two clubs from the North African region.

Starlets will then return home to face Awcon hosts Cameroon on October 22 before taking on Egypt six days later.

David Ouma’s side is grouped in Pool B together with champions Nigeria, Ghana and Mali and they will kick off their campaign against Ghana at the Stade Municipal de Limbe November 20.
