Starlets set Uganda, Ghana friendly dates as AWCON test looms large

The national women football team, Harambee Starlets,  will play Uganda’s Crested Cranes on November 4 and Ghana on November 7 as part of their preparations for the 2018 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) to be staged in Accra, Ghana from November 17-December 1.

Confirming the developments, head coach David Ouma said all plans for the two friendlies are in the place.

“Uganda have confirmed to honour the friendly with us on November 4 at Kasarani and also the hosts Ghana on November 7. Football Kenya federation is in talks with Cameroon Football governing body to allow their team to visit Nairobi for  another friendly before the kick off of AWCON,” Said Ouma.

The Starlets are also in talks with Cameroon, with the aim of facing them in another warm- up match before the showpiece begins.

Earlier today the Starlets beat All Starlets select  1-0 in match played at Utalii grounds, with Thika Queens Mercy Achieng scoring the lone goal before the break.

“I used the match to gauge my players and they displayed very good football. I am currently working on their speed and ball recovery, something which hindered them in the Cecafa tournament this year in Rwanda,” said Ouma.

The Starlets are pooled in Group B together with the champions Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia. The tourney runs from November 17-December 1, with the top three nations earning automatic qualifications to the 2019 FIFA women’s World Cup finals to be held in France.

According to the tactician, all the 32 players called-up to a week ago have reported to camp except USA based Marjolene Nekesa and Esse Mbeyu Akida who plies her professional trade in Israel with Hapoel Morasha Ramat HaSharon FC.
