Starlets to report to camp next week for Cecafa preps

The national women’s football team, Harambee Starlets, is set to report to camp next week to prepare for September’s Cecafa tournament to be held in Uganda.

This comes barely days after the team arrived from Spain where they participated in the COTIF tournament finishing fourth.

Their key player, Esse Akida Mbeyu, scored five goals in two matches in Valencia, Spain where Starlets dream finishing in top three ended after losing 2-0 to Spain in the play-offs.

They beat Portuguese league champions Benfica 3-1 before outdoing Espanyol 3-0 in Group B fixtures to make the last four.

Speaking to Citizen Digital head coach, David Ouma said the experience gained in the tournament will urge the team on in Uganda.

“As a coach and going by what I saw in Spain, I am sure the team will do wonders. We had many injuries; the matches there were tough so when all get better it will be an easy task.

“I really leant a lot of what the ladies need to get better. First they must be aggressive, in the COTIF match against Real Betis the first half things were 0-0 but the two goals they scored in the second half was our fault,” the Sofapaka FC coach added.

“In the friendly match we played against Uganda in Kisumu and beat them 4-0, I selected some players whom I want to organise a friendly match to see whether I can add them to the team,” Ouma stated on further developments of the squad.

Starlets are building-up for their maiden appearance at the Africa Women Cup of Nations in Yaoundé, Cameroon in November.
