Starlets wrap Morocco tour with 6-1 mauling of Khenifra

The national women football team, Harambee Starlets thrashed Morocco’s top tier side CAK Khenifra 6-1 at the Confederation of Morocco Football Stadium to wrap their tour in the North African nation on a high on Monday night

Prolific Neddy Atieno bagged a hat-trick as Christine Nafula, Elizabeth Ambogo and Mary Kinuthia added one apiece to complete the rout.

Speaking to Citizen Digital from Morocco’s capital Rabat, head coach David Ouma said the game offered a good test for his rotated side despite the lopsided score.

“The match was very tough knowing that Khenifra are the former Morocco women top league champions. They were very defensive and tried to beat us through counters. We had to be patient until the 36th minute trying to exploit the chances we created,” he told.

Ouma was forced into an early change when he hauled off Kisii Starlets player, Janet Bundi Moraa who was making her Starlets debut for Corazon Aquino as he sought to press his team’s advantage in aerial balls as well as one-on-one situations.

He hailed the team for the performance saying the consistency exhibited so far ahead of their Africa Women Cup of Nations (Awcon) debut in November was satisfactory.

“We managed to score twice in three minutes. I congratulate the ladies for the good work since I have insisted they take each match seriously. A perfect build up to the Awcon means a lot,” the Sofapaka FC head coach added.

It was their second victory on the trot after annihilating Wydad Casablanca 8-1 on Saturday in their first match in Rabat.

Starlets will return home on Thursday after conducting three training sessions at the ultra modern facilities ahead of their friendly against Cameroon on Saturday.

The team will then host Egypt in another build up match before flying to Cameroon for the return friendly clash on November 5 in Yaoundé.

They will then travel to their designated Awcon base in Cameroon’s coastal city of Limbe until November 19 when Awcon finally kicks-off.

The squad fielded against Khenifra:

Samantha Akinyi, Ann Aluoch, Dorris Anyango, Wendy Achieng, Elizabeth Ambogo, Caroline Anyango, Janet Moraa, Cherish Avilia, Neddy Atieno, Christine Nafula, Mary Kinuthia.

Subs: Vivian Akinyi, Irene Ogutu, Jackline Akoth, Vivian Corazone, Jacky Ogol, Pauline Maise and Enez Mango.
