Stars Kasait, Lorot prevail as Kenya romps to overall EA title

Former World Youth champion Lilian Kasait Renguruk and 2014 African Cross Country silver winner, Andrew Lorot claimed dominant victories in track and field as Kenya romped to the overall title as the Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Association championships closed in Eldoret on Saturday.

Rengeruk who won the World Youth 3000m title in 2013 and added silver at the 2014 World Juniors was peerless in her speciality at the Dr. Kipchoge Keino Stadium where the Singore Girls student took gold in 9:26.90 ahead of compatriot Betty Chepkemoi (9:35.50) in the Kenyan 1-2 as Rwanda’s Celine Iranzi claimed bronze in 9:53.08.

Lorot retained his boy’s 5000m title in 14:22.10 to relegate Ugandan pair Boniface Sikowo and his teammate Nicholas Kimeli to the minor medals.

“I wanted to set a new East African record but it was not possible. However I’m glad that I have won gold in these competitions since Form One to Form Four. I will buy shoes for anyone who will manage that performance.

“Going forward I’m aiming the World Championships, as I graduate to senior races,” the 2014 Africa Junior Cross country silver medallist enthused.

As Kenyans commanded the mid and distance races, Uganda ran away with the honours in the sprints with Samuel Oweka and Jacent Nyamahumage claiming the boy’s and girl’s 200m titles in 22.7 and 24.3.

In other disciplines, Malava Boys crushed Rwanda’s Apapen 3-0 (25-16, 25-20 and 25-18) in the boy’s volleyball finals as the 10-day regional showpiece wrapped up across various venues in Eldoret.

Dethroned champions Rusumo of Rwanda overcame Kenya’s Cheptil High 3-2 to settle for the bronze of in a cliff-hanger play-off. The winners lost the first set 22-25, before Rusomo took the second 18-25.

Cheptil raced to a 2-1 lead by claiming the third 25-20 but the Rwandese battled back to level with 20-25 in the fourth to send the game to a decider they won 15-13.

Kaya Tiwi of Kenya are the girl’s basketball champions, after narrowly defeating Lycee du Lac Tanganyika of Burundi by 54-51, while Apapen took the corresponding boy’s trophy.

Kenya sealed the double in swimming with the boys scooping 526 points ahead of Uganda (319) and Burundi (212) in silver and bronze positions.

The girls prevailed with 548 as the order was repeated with Uganda (353) and Burundi (165) trailing in the podium charge in that order.
