Stirring Homeboyz top KPL U-20 Group D

Kakamega Homeboyz glided past Muhoroni Youth 2-1 and into the quarter finals in their last of fixture of Group D of the Kenyan Premier League Under 20 tournament played at Camp Toyoyo grounds on Thursday.

Eric Muema and Ryan Ashiono netted for Homeboyz and Vincent Cliff Otieno replied for Muhoroni.

It was a one-sided affair in the first half with Homeboyz completely dominating their opponents and were unlucky not to open the scoring in the fifth minute through Bakari Juma whose shot from outside the box flew just inches over the bar.

Minutes later, an audacious 40-yard free-kick effort from Muhoroni’s Silas Shishemi almost crept in after poor handling from Homeboyz keeper Brian Mulumba.

Nicholus Musungu missed from close range after clever interplay with Muema and Alvin Mang’eni, as Mulumba made a spectacular save to deny the forward.

Homeboyz’ efforts paid off in the 36th as Muema beat an on-rushing Mulumba to the ball to chip in a neat finish over the goalkeeper to put his side ahead.

Coach Gilbert Selebwa’s side almost made it 2-0 minutes later but Mang’eni failed to keep his cracker low enough.
Dickens Ouma almost sent the ball into his own net as Homeboyz piled more pressure, pinning the opponents in their own half.

Muhoroni showed more determination in the early minutes of the second half with the substitution with Head Coach Gilbert Omondi bringing Kennedy Ochieng on for Eugine Asike and Billy Mwangi for Edwin Kaop to add more sting to their attack.

Homeboyz capitalized on their opponent’s attacking mentality, executing a swift counter-attacking move that Ahiono converted for the winner.
