Storms thunder past USIU as action heats up in basketball league

Women basketball league side Storms shows no sign of stopping their new found momentum. On Saturday, they were in their immaculate best, beating USIU 49-48 to extend their winning streak as the Premier League entered round five.

Their victory was a battle of nerves as emotions ran high during the closing stages of the game. Keen to stamp their authority, Storms never panicked even when USIU were leading by the half time break, courtesy of a 23-21 lead. It was however in the third and fourth quarters where Storms showed their true colours, snatching the lead and claiming the win albeit with a slim margin of 49-48.

Veteran forward Mercy Wanyama took matters in her own hands when she scored the winning basket for her team in the dying minutes of the quarter which saw both teams suffer from early foul trouble.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Storms coach Abel Nson expressed her delight, adding that it was a well-deserved victory as the girls had executed his plans during the last call out time.

In the men’s match, Strathmore were also on cloud nine after edging out USIU 53-49 in a late fixture, dubbed “the show of might” between the two varsity sides.

USIU enjoyed early advantage in the first half, outscoring their counterparts 19-17 in a beam-balance like performance which saw the Blades come back stronger in the second half, edging out the hosts 53-49 by the blow of the final whistle.

The weekend turned out to be a bad day for the hosts after they both lost matches with small margins which would have been averted if they kept the momentum going till the end of the match.
