Strathmore eye the final despite suffering first defeat

Strathmore Women basketball head coach Ronnie Owino is targeting the Kenya Women Basketball Federation Classic League final despite their unbeaten run coming to an end over the weekend in hands of defending champions Equity Hawks.

Strathmore lost their first match of the season 54-46 to the Hawks at Nyayo Gymnasium with only one game to go in the first leg.

“We reached semis last year and if we can reach the final this year it will be a big improvement on our side. As you know we have young and inexperienced players so reaching the final would be great news to us,” Owino said.

Strathmore had gone nine matches without losing and their first defeat came from the right challenger according to Owino.

“We tried our best but our biggest challenge was that Equity are the defending champions and they used their experience to defeat us,” Owino added.

However, Owino added that as a team they are going to forget everything and focus on the next match against former champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) over the weekend.

On his side, Equity Hawks head coach David Maina said it wasn’t an easy match having in mind Strathmore had not lost.

“It was a tough match but now they have lost one. We have lost one match I believe we shall finish the first leg at the top,” Maina said.

Equity had defeated UON Dynamites 57-35 in their first match on Saturday at the same venue.
