Strathmore seek KHU comfort after Africa Cup heartbreak

Strathmore University Scorpions will turn to domestic action to help them forget their continental shortcomings as they seek a first runners-up finish in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Premier League.

Strathmore bundled out of the Africa Cup for Club Championships after a wretched run and face the tall order of leapfrogging United States International University into second in order to secure a return ticket to the annual showpiece.

USIU have a six-point advantage over their fellow varsity side but that deficit could be halved when the two clash on Friday in the penultimate round of KHU action.

“Against USIU is always a University derby so it is a very tough call every time, what is important now is to put our best foot forward because reflecting on Africa Club championships does not matter anymore,” Strathmore University head coach Meshack Senge told Citizen Digital.

The students finished fifth in the African club Championships a fortnight ago and that trip is likely to haunt them as some of their key players sustained injuries.

“Our target is to earn a slot in the Africa Club championships and though we suffered a lot of injuries from the championship but we will manage,” the tactician said.

Kenya Police and Telkom have already clinched the men and women’s championship titles.
