Takunnen, Maina win in thrilling National Motocross Championships

Former MX1 Champion, Tutu Maina, made a stunning comeback at the sixth round of the Kenya National Motocross Championship at the Jamuhuri Park on Sunday afternoon.

Maina was making his maiden return to circuit racing after a year’s break and thrilled on his return, clearing the ground with all his opponents in his MX 1 category, beating Mikhail Berman and Toby Francombe at the podium.

The event organizers combined MX1, MX2 and the veterans’ class treating spectators to some exhilarating displays of motorcycle artistry.

Leader Ngugi Waweru got a rude shock when Elias Sherman – returning from a seven-month injury lay-off – and showed little signs of rustiness as he eclipsed his opponent in a thrilling tussle.

In the MX65 category, Finn Jet Takkunnen, emerged the winner after beating Dekker Kihara and Nandi Kiplagat for the top honors.

Takkunnen, who trains at the Jamuhuri Park, dominated his category right from the heats and proved too fast for Kihara who could only settle for second place.

“It’s hard to get past him and normally he does things that I can’t do but this time round we are at the same level and keeping tabs on him,” Kihara told Citizen Digital.

In the MX 85, Kigen Kiplagat defeated Christian Chege and James Luusa when he sped off past the duo to beat them at the podium.

Kit Garner showcased his young skills hinting at a bright future at the MX50 category, beating Andrew Ohonde.
