Team Kenya intensifies training ahead of East Africa Games

Kenya’s representatives to this year’s Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) on Tuesday stepped up preparations ahead of the 18th edition of the annual competition to be held in Arusha, Tanzania from August 17-26.

The contingent has pitched camp at Olekajuado and Isinya secondary schools in Kajiado County since Monday with all the teams travelling to the championship already hitting the ground running as they fine tune their skills ahead of the kick-off on Saturday.

Team Kenya, which is expected to field over 50 teams across multiple disciplines, will hold a four-day camp to acclimatise before flag off to the neighbouring country on Friday.

Kenya is the overall defending champion after claiming 28 team medals;10 gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze during last year’s showpiece held in Rwanda and the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) chairman Peter Orero has exuded confidence ahead of the otitle defence.

“We are ready for the championship and we are going for nothing but for the title. To win the overall title we must win in many disciplines as possible,” he said. “The climate in Kajiado is the same as the one we will be in at Arusha and that’s why we chose this place.”

Schools from six countries including Kenya, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Rwanda will compete for titles in volleyball, handball, football, basketball, rugby, swimming, hockey, athletics, netball and racket games.

In rugby, volleyball and hockey where Kenya has ruled for years, three teams in each discipline will compete in Tanzania.

According to the fixtures published by FEASSSA last week, East African champions Upper Hill will launch Kenya’s assault in the rugby sevens alongside domestic rivals Laiser Hill and St. Peters Mumias.

Kiira College of Uganda, LTP from Burundi, Jinja SS Uganda, Okeeswa of Tanzania, and Hana International from Uganda will complete the line-up with the title set to be contested in a round-robin format.

In 15s version it will be a contest between Kenya and Uganda, where the matches will also be played in a round-robin format with last year’s runners up Kakamega set to face off with their Term One national finalists Dagoretti ,Kangaru ,Namilyango College, St.Mary’s Kisubi and Ntare School all from Uganda.

In volleyball girls, four-time champions Kwanthanze will be eyeing a second successive title in Arusha where they have been paired against St. Alloys of Rwanda and Mkalapa from Tanzania.
