Team Kenya official sent home over doping allegations

British publication, Sunday Times, reported that Major Michael Rotich, Kenya’s Team Manager of track and field has been sent home from the Rio 2016 Olympics in the freshest doping scandal to grip the country.

The publication that did a joint investigation with German TV ARD into doping allegations in Kenya claims the Athletics Kenya (AK) South Rift official was secretly filmed offering to protect cheating athletes from Doping Control Officers.

“Major Michael Rotich offered to provide advance warning of drugs tests to athletes in return for a £10,000 (Ksh1,325,180.37) bribe during a Sunday Times undercover investigation.

“He had been expected to lead his team at the opening ceremony in Rio on Friday but failed to turn up on the track after being confronted over the allegations,” the paper wrote.

Sports Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Hassan Wario who is in Brazil for the Games did not respond to Citizen Digital queries on the subject by the time of going to press.

Last month the publication and ARD claimed EPO was found in bins of the High Altitude Training Centre in Iten where Kenyan and British athletes camp.

The claims were strenously denied by the owner, Pieter Langerhorst, who is husband of respected Kenyan born Lornah Kiplagat.
