Tegla Loroupe Boxing Club turns to films to spur behavior change

Tegla Loroupe Boxing Club director Martin Maqio has started a community and relationship filming to promote behavior change among youth in Kawangware, Nairobi.

Following the suspension of all sports activities in the country in March last year, Maqio says he was forced to shut down the boxing facility in the area and has now resorted to using movies to influence the community.

“We are dealing with community and relationship filming which includes dialogue. With this, we are able to partner with police officers and Nyumba Kumi officials to sensitize youth and turning them into good people in the society,” Maqio said.

The closure of the boxing club dealt a blow on it’s growth since sponsors have stopped injecting funds into the project but Maqio is optimistic that things will return to normalcy when the government lifts the ban on sports.

He added his passion has always been towards giving back to the society and not even the Covid-19 pandemic will stop him from reaching the youths.

“I have even been conducting some charity works like giving the youths food and empowering them at my capacity. However this has also been and will not be an easy exercise going forward without the well-wishers and sponsors,” he explained adding that, “our community has capable youths who are visionary and with our support they can reach far as far as development is concerned in teaming up with the rest of the society to build this country”.
