Telkom concedes for the first time but maintains lead
Telkom Kenya’s tight defence was finally breached as they conceded for the first time in their 3-2 victory over Strathmore University in a Kenya Hockey Union Women Premier League at City Park on Sunday evening.
The league leaders stretched their unbeaten run of the season but failed to maintain what would have been a 14th clean sheet, conceding the first match since the start of the campaign.
A brace from Barbara Simiyu and further strike from Jackline Mwangi before half time ensured that the on form leaders jealously guarded their unbeaten record, which was severely tested in the explosive clash.
Denise Bila and Barbra Atigu both shook the net for the Varsity outfits in the 44th and 52nd minutes respectively.
Following the win, Telkom who have scored 87 goals so far top in the women’s standing with 42 points, eight ahead of second placed United States International University from 14 matches.
On the other hand, Strathmore who have been on a fine form since May 1 trails at number four on 30 points; same with Chase Amiras who are third but with a game in hand.
Elsewhere, in another women showdown, sixth placed Sliders were forced to share a point with Vikings as they settled for a 2-2 draw.
It was a tight battle as both sides battled in hunt of goals, Sliders striker Charity Miller blasted home past goalkeeper Carole Okoth in the 12th minute but Vikings fought back to draw level in the 26th minute courtesy of Grace Onimbo.
Avrelia Saisi later gave Vikings the advantage but Sliders effort paid off in the 52nd minute when Christine Mmbone sounded the board to end the showdown with both sides at par.
Sliders who fell 3-0 in the hands of leaders Telkom in their previous match lies sixth on 21 points, one ahead of Vikings who are seven on the log.
