Telkom ice the champagne as Police, Warriors jostle for title

Pressure is mounting on Hockey Premier League leaders Butali Warriors after defending champions Kenya Police cut the gap to three points over the weekend.

Warriors, 2015 champions are perched at the apex of the log with 42 points after 15 games; losing only one game against the law enforces who are second with 39 points.

Butali have played more matches compared to other teams and had a quiet weekend to give room to other clubs to play catch up game

Meanwhile Police have collected all the maximum points in their three matches they’ve played a week since their return from a seven- week self-imposed break occasioned by the tea m’s financial crunch.

At the weekend, the Police were in their riotous gear clobbering Green Sharks 3-2.

Fredrick Masibo, Police coach, says he is not worried about Butali who have been at the top since the start of this season, noting that his concern is to collect maximum points in every single match.

“I don’t care who is at the top, I am concentrating on my team and the most important thing for us is the results at the final whistle. If I win the next match, we will be at level with Butali, so I am focusing on that,” Masibo told Citizen Digital.

There are only seven matches to go before the season comes down and Police and Warriors are scheduled to meet on the D-Day, a match that is expected to determine who lifts the crown.

The winners’ of the men and women league will book a ticket to the African Clubs Championships where police were Kenya’s representatives in Abuja, Nigeria, last year.

Telkom Kenya has dominated the women’s league and after their comfortable 6-0 win yesterday against Sliders, the telecommunications giants solidified their lead, opening a nine-point gap over Strathmore University who have dropped only three point so far.

The students have played eight matches, two shy of Jos Openda’s coached Telkom, who have not lost a single point this season.

Openda was not happy with how the ladies played yesterday despite the huge win  noting that they need to improve on their movements at the middle of the field and attacking from the flanks.

“We are preparing for the African Championships. Right now we are taking each match as a preparation for the Clubs Championships,” Openda gloated.

The telecommunications giants will be crowned winners if they earn a point in their next fixture and their competitors, Strathmore University, drops a point.
