Telkom Kenya cancels partnership with hockey giants

Telkom Kenya has announced it has stopped sponsoring the hockey women’s team, bringing an end to one of the most enduring professional sports partnerships in the country.

The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women’s premier league and the competition’s record holders was informed of the decision on Wednesday after their training session at the City Park Stadium.

The telecommunications provider said it had reached the decision after ‘reviewing its brand assets strategy’ with a view to align it with its ongoing business developments.

“This review has impacted our long standing sponsorship with the Telkom Ladies Hockey Team, and significantly, the renewal of sponsorship for the 2019 season and beyond.

“During this phase, Telkom will be supportive in some capacities as it concludes a rejuvenation of its Corporate Social Investment and Sponsorship strategy,” Telkom said in a statement.

Telkom has been the primary and sole sponsor of the Ladies Hockey team for the past 30 years during which the team has formed the backbone of the national women’s hockey team.
