Telkom maintain favourites tag as Sailors, USIU underline ambition

Though they have been the dominant team in the women hockey Premier League, Telkom will have to be at their best to retain the title this season.

USIU who have been Telkom’s closest challengers in the recent past and Amira Sailors will definitely give Telkom a run for their money if the current form is anything to go by.

The two teams– Sailors and USIU – who are second and third respectively, have been solid so far with the new recruits impressing the most.

After beating Kenyatta University 2-1 over the weekend Amira Sailors have 4 points same as defending champions Telkom.

Amira Sailors coach Thomas Muchemi believes the two matches they have played so far have shown they are capable of winning the title more so after drawing with Telkom in their first game.

“We should have won that match (against Telkom), you saw it yourself, today (Sunday) we have a 2-1 win over Kenyatta, what I can tell you is we are in to win this title, it will not be business as usual,” Sailors coach Muchemi said after the weekend win.

On their part, USIU who had a perfect start beating sliders 2-0 are third on the table with three points, one behind Telkom and Amira who have all played a game more.

Should USIU win their game in hand they will go top of the summit with 6 points and head coach Willis Okeyo believes his side will be a formidable force this term following the signing of four new players among attacker Sue Okech.

“It’s still early, maybe, but you can see how we have started. We have assembled a better team now; we have one of the best players in our team in Sue Okech. She gave us our winning goal today, we can only get better as we go forward,” Okeyo reckoned.

In other matches at the weekend, Lakers and Sliders shared a point each following a 1-1 draw.

The league continues this weekend with Strathmore University women team who have three points facing sixth placed Lakers who have amassed just a point since the term began.
