Telkom ring youngsters for trials ahead of new season

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Premier League women champions Telkom will conduct trials on Tuesday as they seek to inject new blood to the team.

The trials are penciled for  City Park from 3-5pm with the main aim being to add new faces in the award winning squad.

The continental champions have been quiet in the transfer market thus far with no new signings nor departures as two weeks remain to the start of the new season.

According to team manager Jane Nyamogo, they are seeking to recruit talented youngsters to beef up the squad.

“We will be conducting the trials on Tuesday evening where we are actually targeting players below the age of 25 so that they can link up with the experienced lot. It will now depend on the coaches on the number they want to recruit, “Nyamogo told Citizen Digital.

The champions have been training for the last two weeks ahead of the upcoming 2019 season set to begin on March 2.

Telkom were crowned League champions for a record 21st time after sailing through the 2018 season unbeaten and above that they also reclaimed the African Cup for Club Championship title in Abuja, Nigeria.

As the new season looms, Nyamogo said they are not going to rest on their laurels either as they seek to defend both titles.

“Our aim as Telkom is to always become the best and not concede. We want to continue shining both domestically and continentally,” said Nyamogo.

With former head coach Jos Openda having called time on his glittering career at the helm of Telkom, his assistants Rose Mbulo, Judy Apioh, Jackline Atieno and Josephine Ataro are in charge of the queens.

The SOYA team of the year award winners will open the 2019 campaign with a match against Chase Amira on March 10.
