Telkom rip USIU to pull clear in hockey league

Telkom were in ruthless form as they picked apart United States International University (USIU) 6-0 at City Park on Sunday to tighten their grip at the top of the Kenya Hockey Union Premier League.

It was a devastating response from the champions who had yet to concede a single goal until last weekend when they edged Strathmore University 3-2.

Coach Jos Openda expressed his delight at the performance as his charges stepped up their bid to clinch a 20th league crown.

“They played according to plan and I’m pleased we hit the target for today,” Openda told Citizen Digital.

The contest had looked close until the champions went into the lead in the 20th and pulled away for good as Barbara Simiyu opened the scoring from a well worked short corner set-piece routine.

Flavia Mutiva then made it two just before the break as the Varsity side’s defensive loopholes began to show.

Audrey Omaloo and Jane Ofula put their names on the scoresheet after the restart before Jacky Mwangi’s brace completed the rout.

Despite scoring only once Ofula was the star of the show with her range passing as she looks to cement her place in Openda’s plans for the forthcoming Club Championships in Ghana.

“Every game to us counts, we are using this matches to gauge ourselves for next year’s Club Championships and am hopeful we shall replicate the same performance there,” Openda said.

Telkom will be in Ghana to defend the title they have won five times in a row since 2011.

Saturday’s win saw the 19-time league winners pull eleven points clear at the of the log on 45 points ahead of USIU (34) with 14 matches played.
