Telkom tune reverberates to Africa Club Championship final

Telkom are through to the final of the Africa Cup for Club Hockey Championship after out hosts Kada Queens 1-0 in their penultimate group stage match in Abuja, Nigeria.

The win took Telkom top of the women’s standings with 12 points after a flawless run with Audrey Omaido converting a 47th minute penalty to seal victory over Kada on Wednesday.

The nine-time continental champions now face a dead rubber match against defending champions Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for whom they relinquished the title in January after losing 1-0 in the final.

Despite making it to the finals with a match to go, head coach Jos Openda said they is no room for complacency as they want to win the title unbeaten.

“We want to win the Championships unbeaten so we are still soldiering on a game at a time until we reach there (clinch title),” Openda said.

Apart from dethroning Telkom in Accra, Ghana earlier this year, GRA also brought to an end Telkom’s unbeaten run in the tournament that had stretched for a period of five years.

Openda also revealed that due to the nature of the opponent he has already plotted a plan to bring to the sword the Ghanaians with a revenge on the cards.

” In each game we have different approach hence on this (GRA) we will be seeking to open up the play for easy runs and strikes,” revealed Openda.

On their part, GRA thrashed Delta Queens 7-0 and are still in contention for the other spot in the finals alongside their compatriots Ghana Police.

The annual competition is played in a round-robin format with the top two sides in each category (men and women) squaring off in the finals.

The finals are slated for Saturday with the preliminary stage matches coming to an end on Thursday.
