Ten move to court to halt Athletics Kenya elections

Ten applicants have taken legal action against Athletics Kenya (AK) seeking to have the court halt the national athletics governing body from carrying out its elections that were set to kick off on Thursday 27 at ward level and culminate with national polls May 13.

The applicants also want conservatory orders to stay AK’s decision to hold elections of its officers and the Executive Committee, citing a flawed constitutional review process set in motion by the federation.

They accuse the AK for undemocratically proceeding to adopt the amended constitution at its Annual General Meeting held the same date their polls were set rolling at ward level.

Further, the applicant made stunning claims the AK, under the leadership of Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Jackson Tuwei, is yet to be issued with a Certificate of Registration under the Sports Act, 2013 thus the elections could constitute serious violations of the law.

The AK elections are set to be held for the first time in 24 years without the late athletics supremo Isaiah Fundi Kiplagat who during his reign wielded a lot influence to determine the office bearers.

Tuwei, who was then one of the four vice presidents, was appointed by the executive in December 2015 to replace the Kiplagat, following his suspension by world governing body the IAAF alongside two other officials over doping cover up and corruption.

The other officials were vice-president David Okeyo and former AK treasurer Joseph Kinyua whose cases are still with the IAAF.

So far, no other challengers have expressed interest for the AK presidency but incumbent Tuwei remains hot favourite to retain the seat owing to the backing from the disciplined forces and the respect he commands from other regions.

Ahead of the national polls, Tuwei will also be on the ballot contending for a senior vice presidency seat at the National Olympics Committee of Kenya (Nock) when the national body goes to polls on May 5.
