Thika out to stretch WPL lead at Soccer Queens

Thika Queens will look to extend their lead at the summit of the Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League (WPL) when they travel to Soccer Queens on Saturday.

The former champions are unbeaten this season but have been unable to shake off their rivals Vihiga Queens who remain just three points adrift at second place.

Thika Team Manager Granstone Muganga said the team will be buoyed by the return of a few internationals who were away with the national team during their AWCON trip to Equatorial Guinea.

“Training has been going on. All the players are available and ready to play. Those who were away on national team duty joined us on Thursday and have trained well,” said Muganga.

“Vihiga Queens seems to close up on us because they have played one more game but we are ahead. There is no pressure on our side but our aim is to win all our remaining fixtures and victory tomorrow will only give us a good cushion,” Muganga told Citizen Digital.

Soccer Queens will have an uphill task to sustain their two game unbeaten streak having won against Kayole Starlets and drawn with Makolanders before the break.

Nine other fixtures are scheduled across the weekend with a single match set for Monday.

Reigning champions Vihiga Queens will be keen to maintain their pursuit of Thika Queens at the Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday. This is after they crushed eighth placed Wadadia 7-1 in a mid-week fixture that closed the gap at the top to only three points.

The chasing pack of Eldoret Falcons and Trans Nzoia Falcons will want to remain within touching distance of the top positions with the former having two matches.
