Thika Stadium to be renamed after towns great Mundia

The County Assembly of Kiambu is set to table a motion to rename Thika Stadium in honour of the town’s longest serving mayor, Douglas Mundia who died three weeks ago.

Speaking at a memorial service organized at the stadium over the weekend, Kiambu County speaker Stephen Ndichu said the motion which will soon be tabled will also consider renaming some estates and streets in Thika after prominent people who served Thika in different capacities.

“I have discussed this issue with Members of The County Assembley and we have reached to an agreement that because of the great role the fallen mayor played in making Thika what it is, we shall honour him by naming the Thika Stadium or a major street after him, in some cases, some of these names do not make sense for example Magoko Estate,” Ndichu told the mourners.

The county speaker who also served as a member of parliament for the larger Juja constituency, formerly consisting of Thika, Juja and Ruiru, described the fallen mayor as a phenomenal and a visionary leader who should be emulated by other leaders in the region and the country at large.

“He made major contributions towards making Thika an industrial and commercial center in the region and this will never be erased in our history. He also laid the foundation of several facilities in Thika, he was exceptional,” Kiambu speaker noted.

Mayor Mundia was first elected mayor of Thika Town in 1968 when it was declared a municipality and served until 1992.

He was buried four days after his demise, an incident said to have left mourners who have been trooping to his Thika home for burial preparations in utter shock but the family cleared that he was buried as per his wish.

Mundia was buried by his relatives at his Kang’oo rural home in Gatundu North, Kiambu County on February 17.
