Thika United on the right course: Coach Nandwa

Thika United Head Coach James Nandwa has come to the defense of the club’s management following concerns raised by a number of fans expressing their dissatisfaction over various governance issues.

A host of disgruntled fans have blamed the club’s top management for their disappointing start to the SportPesa Premier League (SPL), with the club poised dangerously just above the relegation zone after eight matches.

“It’s not always true that a club’s management is to blame when your best players walk out and I understand how difficult this is to understand as a fan. You just don’t want to see your favourite player leave,” Nandwa told Citizen Digital.

Straight from leading Thika to a 1-0 win over Chemelil Sugar for their first win of the season on Sunday, Nandwa noted keeping top clubs off your best players is a difficult task given their financial muscle.

“As much as playing for a bigger club is a thrilling experience for all players, the truth is that better pay is a huge motivation for them,” the former AFC Leopards tactician explained.

He called on fans to remain patient saying the club’s form is currently on the up and cited his own record since taking over from Moses Irungu as proof that they are committed towards ensuring Thika remains a top SPL club.

“I have been in charge of Thika for four matches losing only one of those. It’s not that much of a record but I think it’s an improvement. Our first win on Sunday was very crucial; now the boys believe in themselves and that is very important for their confidence,” he added.

Thika play John ‘Bobby’ Ogolla’s Nairobi City Stars on Sunday, 17 and Nandwa believes that despite a few injury concerns they can keep their momentum going with a second straight win.

“The most important thing is understanding the needs of your players. I noticed they have struggled to last the entire 90 minutes so our focus has enhanced their physical aspect.”

“The team’s shape is looking good.”
