Tigoi Girls handed ticket to Mombasa after appeal

Butere Girls have been stripped of the Western Region basketball title after Tigoi lodged a successful appeal against the legibility of one of their players, Georgine Aketch whom they claimed was overage.

In their protest, Tigoi asserted Aketch was born in June 1998, over one year older than is permitted as per the competition rules of the School Games which state only students born in September 1999 or under are eligible to play.

The decision was made by the offices of the Regional Director of Education (RDE) – Western on Thursday and has drawn fierce criticism from  Kakamega County Secretary, Mathew Murunga.

Murunga sensationally accused Tigoi Girls for allegedly using a photocopy of a fake birth certificate to during their appeal, and termed the decision ‘unfortunate’.

“We respect the ruling by the RDE(Regional Director of Education-Western) head quarter office but I must say that what Tigoi used as the evidence is not authentic .

“They just went to registrar’s office in Mumias to print amen fake documents and take it’s photocopy using it to back up their complain,” he said.

Tigoi were defeated 60-42 in the final by Butere and their successful appeal now means they will represent the Western Region during the National Games in Mombasa in April.
