Kenya rugby sevens women’s team Lionesses were outshined 12-35 by Russia in their second Pool C match at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium Thursday.

After an awful start that saw the Felix Oloo charges go down 0-14 just three minutes into the game, as a spirited fight saw them inch closer to their opponents and went to the break at 14-12.

Nadezhda Sozonova had given the Russians the first try, before Kristina Seredina added the second with successful conversions.

Janet Okello had a double, first outsprinting her opponents and meticulously placing the ball between the sticks before Sarah Ndunde perfectly converted.

Her second try just before the halftime was not converted as Ndunde missed the target, but optimism was clear on the Kenyans heading for the break.

However, the Russians dominated the second half scoring two more to secure their first win of the competition which took them to second behind leaders New Zealand.

They had narrowly lost 12-14 to Great Britain in their first match earlier, while Kenya lost 7-29 to New Zealand.

Kenya will play Great Britain in their final match, the latter lost 21-26 to New Zealand in their final match.
