Towering Egypt spiked Kenya 3-1 to bag the sole Zone V ticket to the All Africa Games as the curtains came down on the volleyball qualifiers at the Kasarani Indoor Arena Wednesday evening.

The Moses Epoloto coached Kenya went down to the North African side 19-25 in the first set before bouncing back to win the second set 25-23. After holding a huge advantage in the third set, the Kenyans shot themselves in the foot losing the third set 26-28 before the Egyptians wrapped up the match in the fourth set with a25-20 win.

Although Kenya was already out of contention, it was the country’s pride that was at stake and following the disappointment, Kenyans will have to wait longer to see their men team grace  the continental championships.

Kenya opened the championship with a 3-2 win over Uganda before losing 3-0 to Rwanda, which all but sealed their hopes finishing the championships fourth with a sole point

The win for Egypt further prolongs their dominance in the region as they finished top of the standings with nine points.

Elsewhere, in an earlier match played at the same venue, Uganda handed Rwanda a shock 3-1 defeat of (25-23, 28-26, 18-25, 35-33).

Uganda thus finished the competition with four points after one win and a loss while Rwanda went home with three points after registering a win and two losses.

The four-day championship played in a round-robin format was being used to select the sole representative of the Zone Five for the upcoming All Africa Games set for Casablanca, Morocco in August.

Kenyans will however take heart as the women’s team, Malkia Strikers, booked a place in the continental showpiece after reigning supreme in Kampala, Uganda a fortnight ago.
