TUM Marines, Zetech Oaks earn promotions to KRU Championship

Mombasa-based Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Marines and Zetech Oaks secured their spots in the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Championship with impressive victories in the semifinals staged at Khamisi High School Mombasa and JKUAT grounds, Nairobi respectively.

TUM Marines faced off against Sigalagala who had travelled from Kakamega in a high-stakes showdown that kept spectators on the edge.

Marines who have now replaced relegated Kabarak University started the tie on a high note led by Steve Migel's early try which was expertly converted by veteran Elias Gitonga, the Marines built a commanding 12-0 lead minutes later, thanks to Ezra Mumbo's five-pointer.

Despite Sigalagala's valiant efforts to stage a comeback, the Marines kept knocking on Sigalagalas door for more points, the event which saw Elias Gitonga drilling a penalty before Ezra landed his brace for a 20-0 lead at the breather.

Sigalagala came back a better side in the second half launching a series of attacks with Sam Bachai scoring a try and a penalty for Sigalagala to reduce the deficit 20-10.

Sigalagala landed a converted try, and two penalties in succession but Tum will have Elias Gitonga's magical boot to thank as he drilled home two quick penalties from tight angles to award the Brian Owino-coached side a ticket to Kenya Rugby Union Championship league, TUM clinching a hard-fought 26-23 victory.

On the other hand, Zetech Oaks faced tough competition against Eldoret-based outfit Project 61 hammering them 23-09.

Zetech who replaced Shamas Foundation got two well-executed tries and conversions, Zetech asserted dominance early in the match.

Despite Project61's efforts to narrow the gap, Zetech Oaks remained composed, maintaining their lead throughout the game. With standout performances from Mike Wekesa and Jack Mangale, the Oaks emerged victorious with a 23-9 win, securing their second stint in the KRU Championship.

The two sides will now face off in the finals to determine the winner.
