Tusker sink Bandari to keep Matano flawless
Tusker FC made it three wins on the bounce as they edged Bandari FC 1-0 at the Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa to maintain Robert Matano’s flawless start to life back at the Kenyan Premier League (KPL).
Brian Osumba’s second half brace was all Tusker needed although there was a sour ending for the 10-time champions when defender Eric Ambunya was sent off deep into stoppage time for a second bookable offence.
The result lifted Tusker to eight-place on the KPL log as their resurgence under Matano gained momentum following a dismal start that had seen them drift into the relegation deep.
At the Sudi Stadium in Bungoma, visiting Ulinzi Stars downed Nzoia Sugar 2-0 thanks to second half strikes from John Kago and Elvis Nandwa.
It was the also the third successive win for Dunstan Nyaudo’s men as they climbed to fourth on the standings, level with third-placed Bandari FC on 22 points.
New AFC Leopards head coach Rodolfo Zapata will have to wait longer for his maiden win at the club after they were forced to settle for a barren draw with Chemelil Sugar at the Moi Stadium.
There had been unrest at the Den on Friday following reports players had threatened to skip the away trip to Kisumu over unpaid allowances and there was nothing to smile about as their winless run stretched to eight matches.
Sony Sugar versus Kakamega Homeboyz produced the day’s other goalless draw to wrap up Saturday’s KPL action.
Mathare United could go joint-top with Gor Mahia FC on Sunday with a win away at Kariobangi Sharks.
