League expansion tussle on as KPL sues FKF

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited has taken Football Kenya Federation to court seeking to bar the governing body from discussing the expansion of the country’s top flight league as proposed by FKF President, Nick Mwendwa.

On Tuesday, KPL CEO Jack Oguda revealed that the company’s Governing Council was set to hold a crunch meeting on Friday to deliberate on the possible expansion with Mwendwa reportedly saying he had already reached out with the league’s official partners, Supersport, and that the matter was a foregone conclusion.

The federation is due to hold its AGM on Saturday with the proposal to increase the number of KPL teams to 18 from 16 teams among the items listed on the agenda.

“We signed an agreement last year in December. We have a joint executive committee which was given the mandate to discuss issues relating to league size and since FKF appears to be breaching the same, the Governing Council decided that we go get an interpretation of the agreement from the sports tribunal,” Oguda told Citizen Digital.
