Tyler Ongwae wins Danish Cup with Bakken Bears

Kenya basketball international Tyler Ongwae inspired 18-time Danish basketball champions Bakken Bears to the Danish Men’s Cup by beating Horsens 80-82 in the final.

Ongwae scored seven points and had 10 rebounds with an assist helping Bakken Bears reclaim the title they last won in 2018 by upsetting the 2019 champions.

The first two periods were even with Horsens leading 36-35 at the break.

During the third quarter Bakken took the lead 47-42, but Horsen got 15 points in a row, going ahead 57-47.

But Bakken proved a hard nut to crack by overturning the 47-57 deficit to lead 58-59 with only six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The real drama came with three minutes left, Bakken scored a three-pointer to take the lead, but Horsens forced the match into extra time after levelling the score 69-69.

For the 13th time, the Bakken Bears can call themselves the Danish Cup winners, but rarely has the decision been as close as it was against Horsens IC with the final wavering back and forth and only after extra time did the Bakken Bears win 82-80.

Taylor Ongwae has won this cup coming off a great performance for the Kenya Morans team after his buzzer-beating shot over Angola earned the nation a historic slot in the 2021 Afrobasket Championship.

He joined the Bakken Bears in 2018 from Swiss outfit SAM Basket having also played for Taranaki Mountainairs in New Zealand and Italy for Felice Scandone and in Sweden were he turned out for Södertälje Kings.
