Uganda beat Kenya in T20 thriller

Uganda beat Kenya by five wickets with one ball to spare in a thrilling playoff match at the 2018 ICC Women’s World T20, Africa  Qualifier in Namibia’s capital Windhoek on Friday.

Kenya posted 89/5 off their 20 overs and in a dramatic finish, Immaculate Nakisuuyi hit a four off the second last ball to clinch a dramatic win for Uganda, who will now meet Zimbabwe in the final on Saturday.

Sent in to bat, Kenya got off to a solid start as el and Queentor Abel and Veronica Abuga put on 33 for the first wicket.

Margaret Ngoche (8) and Silvia Kinyua (1) followed shortly after to leave Kenya at 47/3 after 12 overs, but Sarah Wetoto joined Abel to put on 40 runs for the fourth wicket.

Wetoto was eventually out for 25 off 21 balls (3×4), while Abel was 36 not out off 56 balls (3×4) as Kenya reached 89/5 off their 20 overs.

Gertrude Candiru (2/18) was Uganda’s best bowler.

Uganda lost wickets regularly in their run chase as Kenya held the upper hand in the early stages, with Saidati Kemigisha (0), Naome Bagenda (5), Candiru (7) and Mary Nalule (4) all went cheaply.

Opener Rita Musamali however grew in stature as the innings progressed, and when Frankline Najjumba was dismissed for 12 with the total at 56/5 with five overs to go, Kenya still held the upper hand.

Immaculate Nakisuuyi however joined Musamali to keep Uganda in the hunt and in a dramatic last over she hit the winning four as they reached 90/5 with a ball to spare.

Musamali remained not out on 28 off 43 balls, while player of the match Nakisuuyi scored 25 not out off 15 balls.

-Namibia finish fourth-

In the morning match, Namibia beat Tanzania by six wickets to win the fourth place play-off.

Sent in to bat, Tanzania got off to a solid start as Fatuma Kibasu and Monica Pascal put on 28 for the first wicket before Pascal was dismissed by Sune Wittmann for 12.

Namibia maintained the pressure with some great fielding as Pius and Saidi were both run out on quick succession to leave Tanzania struggling at 3/37.

Tabu Omary however joined Kibasu and led Tanzania’s revival with a 49-run partnership for the foutth wicket before Kibasu was bowled by Petro Enright for 39 which came off 57 balls (2×4).

Omary went on to score 23 not out off 30 balls (2×4) as Tanzania reached 92/4 off their 20 overs.

In their run chase, Namibia lost Anneri van Schoor (1) and Enright (17) in quick succession, but Yasmeen Khan and Irene van Zyl steadied the ship with a 50-run partnership.

Khan (18) and Van Zyl (25) were dismissed within three balls, but Sune Wittmann (9 not out) and Hannelise de Klerk (13 not out) took Namibia to victory with 11 balls to spare.
