Ugandan nabbed in Kisumu in match-fixing claim

Police in Kisumu are holding a Ugandan national accused of attempting to bribe Western Stima FC’s chairman and players to influence the result of their match against KCB at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium on Sunday.

Kisumu Central sub-county Police Boss Peter Karam says Stima chairman Laban Jobita alerted police that the suspect approached him with an intention of fixing the game in exchange of cash.

Jobita also alerted DCI officers who disguised themselves as players alongside other few players and they went ahead to meet the accused at a Kisumu hotel.

Karam says at the meeting, the suspect Ronald Niwagira then handed out Sh10,000 for ‘lunch’ and another promise of USD 5000 if they went ahead and lost match in Nakuru.

DCI officers then pounced on the suspect, passport number K5484752, a Ugandan national whose immigration status had expired.

He says police also found the suspect in possession of a further Sh 61,600 cash as he was being booked at the central police station.

The suspect will face immigration and corruption related charges in court upon completion of investigations.
