Ulinzi halt Tusker charge as Nyangweso fumes

Tusker FC were forced to settle for 1-1 draw with Ulinzi Stars, squandering an opportunity to return top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) standings on Sunday.

Timothy Otieno converted a second half penalty to restore parity and salvage a point for Tusker after Enosh Ochieng had put the visitors ahead just before half time.

The Brewers remained just a point behind Kakamega Homeboyz who seized leadership on Saturday and are level with Gor Mahia FC on 38 points although the champions have two games in hand.

Otieno and Luke Namanda both wasted clear cut chances in the early minutes but were unable to put them away with Jackson Macharia coming closest to opening the scoring.

Ulinzi youngster Ibrahim Shambi missed from a Daniel Waweru cross before Ochieng found the opener to fire the visitors 1-0 up two minutes before the break.

Whatever Robert Matano told his charges at the break seemed to have worked as the hosts upped their tempo and that pressure paid off when Jacktone Odhiambo was brought down inside the penalty area and Otieno stepped up to dispatch it.

The result left Ulinzi head coach Benjamin Nyangweso ruing the absence of dangerman Oscar Wamalwa who was suspended for the match.

“I think I’ve lost two points here today; the referee gave every foul against ulinzi and this frustrated my players. I’m not happy with the point. Wamalwa’s absence was felt today but we will have him for the next match.

His opposite number Robert Matano said he was content with the point and said he was happy to keep their unbeaten run going.
