Ulinzi shoot Wazito, go second on the KPL table
Sharp-shooting Ulinzi Stars gunned down Wazito FC 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Ruaraka grounds in Nairobi to move to position two on the Kenyan Premier League table.
The victory stretched the soldiers points tally to 28, two shy of leaders Gor Mahia who have three games in hand. K’Ogalo could however stretch the advantage should they beat Sofapaka on Sunday at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
At Ruaraka, Ulinzi were forced to wait until the 73rd minute when Elvis Nandwa headed home the opener before Masita Masuta sealed all the three points in the 89th minute.
The soldiers took control of the game early, piling pressure with a couple of set-pieces and open play chances.
Wazito keeper, Philip Odhiambo was the busier of the two pulling a great save from a looping header from Elvis Nandwa earlier on as the soldiers made their dominance count.
Wazito had their own chances through set pieces but not good enough to find the mark.
It was after the relentless pressure that Wazito’s defence caved in in the 73rd minute when Nandwa sneaked in a close range header to the bottom right hand side of Odhiambo Phillip’s net.
Stung by the goal, Wazito launched a barrage of attacks in search of an equaliser but the soldiers remained composed, guarding their lines tightly even in the face of the onslaught.
Ulinzi coach Dunstan Nyaudo later made substitutions which paid dividends when Ibrahim Shambi added to the tally in the 87 minute.
