Ulinzi Stars set for EAC title defence

Four-time Kenyan Premier League (KPL) winners Ulinzi Stars will depart the country for Bujumbura ahead of their East Africa Military Games title defence bid.

The 11th Edition of the Games and Cultural event will begin on August 24 to September 8 with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) sending a 121-man contingent comprising sportspersons and officials.

The Burundian capital will host teams from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania Uganda as well as their home team where they will battle for supremacies across multiple disciplines including football, handball and netball.

The KDF emerged the overall winners of the previous edition held in Rwanda after winning gold in three of five sports disciplines. Their best performances were in handball, football and cross-country

Last year Ulinzi won the football title after hosts Rwanda Defence Forces failed to score more than a goal against Tanzania to claim the top prize.

In the domestic league, the 2010 KPL winners bounced back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Chemelil Sugar courtesy of Daniel Waweru’s solo striker at the Afraha Stadium on Tuesday, giving them a perfect send off.

The Military Games will be officially be opened and closed at the Prince Louis Rwagasore National Stadium.

The event, themed One People One Destiny through EAC Military Games and Cultural Event 2017, will involve over 500 participants representing the various services of the Defence Forces of the EAC Partner States.
