Umoja begin league return preps in earnest

Kenya Basketball Federation men’s league side Umoja have wasted no time in returning to the court as they await official communication from the federation regarding the exact date league action will resume.

Club chairman George Gacheru Kago says all players returned to training camp immediately the government lifted the suspension of all sports activities last Saturday and have played one friendly match against local rivals Emyba.

“We resumed training immediately the president allowed all sports to resume last Saturday.

We have already played a friendly match with our local rivals Emyba because the boys have been out for a month,” he explained.

He says all members of the establishment have received the coronavirus vaccine adding that they will aim to intensify their training this week in their bid to brush the cobwebs and get match ready.

“We thank the government for making it possible for us to get vaccinated. All members of our team have received the jab.

We want to get ready such that we do not have to worry about the fitness of our players in case the federation announces the particular date for the restart.”

He however says many teams will find the return tough to put up with given the fact that they will have to play more games in a week to catch up for the lost time.

“Everyone will feel the brunt of the heavy fixture workload that we will have to make do with since we have been away for almost two months now.”

Despite the hiatus, Kago is confident they will pick up from where they left and carry on with the momentum as they eye a playoff slot.

“As I said earlier many teams will struggle and we are no exception. We want to work hard so that we stand a better chance of making it to the playoffs when the season is over.

Kenya Basketball Federation fixtures secretary Joseph Amoko had earlier hinted that May 12th could be the league restart date.
