Unimpressed Ayimba tears into rugby union

With close to two years in the cold, former Shujaa tactician Benjamin Ayimba is yet to understand the reasons that led to his sacking by the Kenya Rugby Union.

Ayimba was given the boot in September 2016 after he guided  Shujaa to clinching the Singapore Sevens in 2016.

The sacking must have been painful then, but fast forward, Ayimba maintains that malice could have led to his dismissal.

In fact, Ayimba attributes the team’s current inconsistent performances to his abrupt sacking.

He said: “My sacking was based on malice and wickedness.There was no reason whatsoever for me to be sacked maliciously like that; it explains the current poor performance in the national team.”

He went on: “The union should be more professional and desist from chest thumping.I won’t be surprised though if the game goes to the dogs soon if they don’t take their work seriously,” Ayimba said.

During Ayimbas time as head coach, Kenya scooped the Cup trophy at the Singapore Sevens and amassed 99 points compared to 23 they have so far collected this season in three rounds.

Ayimba also guided Shujaa to Cup semis in the 2013 Sevens World Cup and the performance at the 2009 World Cup saw the soft-spoken coach awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior by then President Mwai Kibaki.

Ayimba, arguably the most decorated rugby tactician in Kenya, has at the same time pleaded with relevant sporting bodies to be on the forefront in nurturing youthful talent if the national team is to have a bright future.

The soft-spoken trainer who currently works as Menengai Cream Homeboyz technical director dismissed suggestions that he could be eyeing a return to the Shujaa hot-seat.

He said: “I am satisfied with what I am doing right now and enjoying every bit of it; more so nurturing new talent. What more could I ask for?” he posed.
