United’s Martial gets down to business with goal against Liverpool

Manchester United’s new signing Anthony Martial got down to business with a brilliant goal against Liverpool in his debut match played at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The 19-year-old forward, signed for £36 million from Monaco scored a third goal to stretch Manchester United’s lead beyond Liverpool in the dying minutes of the match.

Christian Benteke’s stunning overhead kick had given Liverpool a lifeline after Daley Blind’s crisp finish and Ander Herrera’s penalty put Louis van Gaal’s side in control.

Martial made himself a hero after coming on as a second-half substitute for Juan Mata in the 65th minute, beating Liverpool defenders Nathaniel Clyne and Martin Skrtel before striking a shot past Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet.

The match also saw United keeper David de Gea make a return to the first team after missing six matches, when the transfer window was open, with Real Madrid hot in pursuit of his signature.

De Gea signed a new four-year contract with Manchester United on Friday following the breakdown of his move to Real Madrid at the closing day of transfer windows on August 31.

De Gea demonstrated his worth with fine saves of shots from Danny Ings and Jordon Ibe to ensure the Red Devils get maximum points, pushing them to second place in the Premier League table behind Manchester City.
