Unstoppable Nzoia whip Police, Zoo buy space

The revolving door that is the race to finish second to Nzoia United FC in the National Super League (NSL) saw Zoo Kericho FC buy some breathing space as rivals Nakumatt FC continued their downward spiral following the weekend action.

League leaders Nzoia went on rampage when they blew Police FC off the park in a 5-0 mauling- the joint largest winning margin in second tier this weekend- to continue their unrelenting charge towards finishing the campaign without defeat.

A brace from Benjamin Machuma (29’, 46’) either side of the break powered the leaders to make mince meat of the cops in a match where Patrick Oluomo and Lawrence Ochieng Juma opened the floodgates by scoring in the fourth and ninth minutes.

Brian Yakhama sealed the rout in the 79th to take Nzoia’s tally to the staggering 79 points from 31 games and their target now will be chalk the magical figure of 100 with seven games to wrap up what has been their procession to the Kenyan Premier League.

Behind them, the intriguing battle for second saw Zoo come from behind to register 2-1 win at home against relegation threatened Ligi Ndogo at the Kericho Green Stadium to move to 63.

The visitors got the lead in the 45th through Ogochukwu Philip Mbaene but Zoo bounced back through Kepha Nyamanya and Bernard Wanguche in the 54th and 67th minutes.

After Nakumatt dropped points against KCB following a shocking 1-0 defeat on Saturday, Kariobangi Sharks jumped above them to third on goal difference after blanking Nakuru All Stars 3-0 at Camp Toyoyo Grounds with both on 59.

Sharks have a game in hand over the retailers who have dropped from second to fourth in two weekends.

Bottom placed Shabana were humbled 5-0 by Bidco United but team manager Andrew Kanuli is optimistic that his team will fight the pressure to avoid being axed.

“With the seven matches that are remaining we can work hard as a team to fetch positive results to help us remain in the league,”  Kanuli told Citizen Digital.

“The club has had monetary crisis this season and this has greatly affected the players’ morale. I hope the team will step up to enable us avoid been axed from the league,” the official stressed.

The Kisii based club next task is against mid table Agro Chemicals who drew 0-0 with Nairobi Stima.

A  Kennedy Wanjie winner in the 70th minute helped Wazito beat fifth placed Vihiga United (54) to slow their push of nailing an automatic promotion place.
