Upbeat Equity hopes for better performance in Maputo Championship

After clinching the Africa Zone Five women trophy in October in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the East Africa and Kenya basketball powerhouse Equity Bank have trained their eyes on bagging the Africa Women Championship that tips off in Maputo, Mozambique from November 16- 25.

The bankers who have enjoyed good form both at home and in the region will attempt to improve on last year’s performance where they finished eighth; a tourney held in Angola.

Equity qualified for the Africa Women Championship after outclassing then Africa Zone Five champs Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) 70-54 in the final though both teams will represent the region in the championship.

Domestically, Equity have had a good run in the league finishing  first in the regular league with 39 points; losing just one game in the entire league ahead of defending champions KPA.

So meticulous have the bankers been that they have already booked themselves a place in the semi finals playoffs after smashing USIU 93-32,  63-39 in the first and second game respectively  at the quarters and  will now be meet either Strathmore University or Zetech University  as they bid to get to the final.

According to their head coach David Maina, their goal is to go “as far as possible” in Maputo.

“Our preparation is going on well. We are looking forward to get to the knockout stage,” Maina told Citizen Digital. The team departs for Mozambique tomorrow.

Meanwhile KPA who will also be representing the region in the championship have high hopes of improving on their last year’s performance where they finished fifth.

KPA captain Brenda Angeshi said they expect nothing but the best.

“I believe we will give out our best because we have trained well so we expect good performance,” She said.

Her statements were echoed by team’s head coach Antony Ojukwu who noted they want to improve on last performance and have a podium finish.

Locally, KPA finished second in the regular league with 38 points, one behind Equity lo sing only two matches out of 20 and have already booked themselves a place in the semi finals playoffs where they will meet Storms.

The dockers are already in Maputo, Mozambique for the tournament.
