Ushuru hit Shabana to tighten grip on NSL lead

National Super League (NSL) leaders Ushuru FC defeated Shabana FC 2-1 at Ruaraka Grounds to continue with their unbeaten run as the second tier league entered seventh round on Friday.

The tie was heading to a 1-1 draw but the tax men avoided the Kisii based scare in the 86th minute when Benson Amianda smashed in the winner to ensure the former Kenya Premier League (KPL) side cemented their grip on the top of the table.

After the win, the Ken Kenyatta coached side lead the 20-team league on19 points, one clear of second-placed Wazito, who thrashed Eldoret Youth 2-0 at Camp Toyoyo on the same day.

Ushuru who lost to Mount Kenya United formerly Nakumatt FC in the top flight play-offs last year have won six matches drawing once as they eye the KPL return next season after missing since 2016.

Elsewhere, struggling Green Commandos who were eyeing a turnaround of fortunes after recent poor outings failed to punch their weight after they were held 2-2 by fifth placed Nairobi Stima Bukhungu Stadium.

The Western based side were assured of all the three points and their second win of the season so far  before the visitors leveled in the dying moments of the tie to spoil the party.

After the stalemate the Bredan Mwinamo led side occupies position 18 on four points three above bottom placed Modern Coast Rangers.

Earlier at the Camp Toyoyo Grounds Kangemi All Stars shared spoils against visitors Coast Stima following a 1-1 result in the final whistle.
