USIU claims the bragging rights in hockey derby

United States International University USIU thumped Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) 2-1 in an entertaining women hockey premier league match played at City Park grounds on Sunday afternoon.

The 2017 runners up, USIU, made a beautiful build-up play deep from their defence that ended up with a clinical finish from Stacy Tumaini in the sixth minute but her goal was cancelled out by JKUAT’s Lesley Bongo 11 minutes later after she converted  a short corner.

Rachael Njogu fired in the winner for the home team from a short range after several passes in the dangerous area that were as a result of a short corner.

The visitors could have levelled the scores in the dying minutes but USIU defenders did well to thwart JKUAT’s penalty corners.

Willis Okeyo, USIU’s head coach, in a post-match interview admitted that they have missed their season’s target of finishing at the top two to book a ticket for the African Championship.

“It feels good when you win a match but the title is already gone. Telkom and Strathmore are way ahead of us and that means they will represent Kenya in the club championship,” Okeyo lamented after the match.

Following the win, USIU knocked off Chase Amira from the third position in the Kenya Hockey Union League table.

The Okeyo coached have 13 points, same as Chase though the latter has an inferior goal difference with three matches to go.

The students have so far won four games, an equal number of losses and a draw but have tricky tests against Sliders club, bottom side Vikings and Chase Amira .

JKUAT’s head coach, Samuel Oungo, believes his charges deserved a point at City Park.

“We played very well and we deserved a point. We made a few slip-ups which is normal but unfortunately we were punished. We had our chances but we missed them,” a disappointed Oungo said after the game.
