Van Gaal to hold talks with Manchester United over contract extension

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is set to hold talks with the club’s management over a possibility of extending his current contract.

Van Gaal joined United in 2014, taking over from David Moyes who was sacked following a string of poor results that saw the then defending champions finish seventh on the league.

The former Netherland manager’s current contract at Manchester United runs out at the end of 2016/17 season with Van Gaal’s previous statements ruling out a possibility of an extension.

According to Guardian, however, the Dutch seems to have softened his stand with united owner Glazers expressing content with Van Gaal’s progress.

The meeting between United management and Van Gaal is slated for the New Year as the club’s hierarchy seeks to convince him to extend his stay beyond 2017.

Despite the admiration from United’s owners, Van Gaal has faced wide condemnation from a section of the fans who have termed his philosophy as ‘boring’.

One of Van Gaal’s fiercest critics has been former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes who has accused the Dutch manager of substituting United’s attacking football for a possession style of play.

Van Gaal’s first season in charge was monumental as he helped United finish in the top four ad earn a Champions League slot after a year out in the cold.

With 15 matches played so far, United are fourth with 29 points, same as Manchester City who have a superior goal difference.

Leicester City top the table with 32 points while Arsenal are second with 30 points.
