Varsity side MMUST out to seal Kenya Cup slot

Masinde Muliro University rugby team will be angling for a berth in the Kenya Cup for the first time in their history when they face off with Mean Machine in the Championship semi finals playoffs set for Saturday at the MMUST grounds in Kakamega.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, assistant head coach John Asila said their focus is to win the match to earn the right to feature in the top division.

“In our trainings our main focus has been on the Championship playoffs semi finals, our aim is to earn a Kenya Cup slot which I believe we will achieve weekend with a win against Machine, ” said Asila.

The western Kenya based side has been in training since the university opened, following the Covid 19 protocols, and Asila believes they will win the match.

“We have been training since universities opened last year, following the government’s Covid 19 protocols.”

“We’ve been focusing on gym work, individual training, strength and conditioning to keep our players physically fit, so the players have been working together for a while now, ” he added.

The varsity side finished fifth in the 2017/2018 Championship campaign and second last season with Asila saying hard work is the key to their success.

“The progress in our team is just hard work which has given us consistency over the years and we believe we’re prepared enough to play in the Kenya Cup,” echoed Asila.

MMUST finished second last season to earn a direct ticket for the semi-finals while Mean Machine thrashed Egerton Wasps 37-00 in the quarterfinals over the weekend.

The other semi final match will see Strathmore Leos tackle Northern Suburbs with the finalists earning promotion to Kenya Cup.
