Victor Wanyama quits Tottenham, moves to Major League side Montreal

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has quit the English Premier League club to join  Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact.

Tottenham confirmed the development in a brief statement published on their official website.

“We have reached agreement with Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact for the transfer of Victor Wanyama.

“The midfielder made 97 appearances for us in all competitions following his move from Southampton in June, 2016, and scored seven times, including the opening goal in our final game at White Hart Lane.

We wish Victor well for the future.”

Montreal are placed third in the Eastern Conference of the Major League with three points having won their opener against New England Revolution last Saturday. The Eastern Conference has 13 teams same as the Western Conference.

In the last two seasons, Wanyama’s stock has fallen at the club failing to command regular playing time and has not started any of the Spurs’ league matches this term.

He has also struggled with injuries leading to loss of form.

Prior to joining Spurs, Wanyama turned out for Southampton and Scottish giants Celtic, where he made a name, prompting coach Mauriccio Pochettino, then a Saints head coach to lure him to the club.

Pochettino would later take him to north London but it seems the football honey moon is over for the 28-year-old Muthurwa bred defensive midfielder, who horned his football skills at Nairobi City Stars before making his way to Swedish side Helsingborg.

‘Big Vic’ as he is fondly known also turned out for Germinal Beerschot in the Belgian Premier League. He is expected to link up with Harambee Stars for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Comoros.
