Vihiga football team fire warning shots ahead of KYISA Games

Vihiga County’s Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association Games (KYISA) football team has fired warning shots to opponents ahead of the youth fiesta to be held in Kilifi County next month.

Sports Chief Officer Sylvester Kaane says Vihiga will assemble a strong contingent following a rigorous selection process in the April 14-21 event in Malindi.

Vihiga County is returning to the annual championship for the first time since 2019.

“Vihiga emerged third in the Talanta Hela competitions, where we took eight players to the national team. Those players who did not travel to Spain are eligible to be part of the football team that will fly Vihiga’s flag in Malindi.

“Apart from the ongoing trials at Kidundu Sports Grounds, we sent out scouts during the Governor's Cup Finals early this year who have identified the football talent that will be up to the task ahead. We warn our opponents to prepare for a bruising battle.”

This year’s ninth edition has attracted more than 30 counties and the annual championships features players aged between 18 and 23 for both genders.

The disciplines will include football, beach football, beach volleyball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, and boat racing among others.

Kaane added that the championship will help promote sports among the youth and unearth grassroots talents in the country.

“Players within the age bracket of 18-23 years who participate in the County leagues and other lower tiers are eligible to try their luck in today's trials. I am operating on a lean budget hence unless other partners come in, Vihiga may only be represented by the football team only,” he added.

He says the sports departments need more than Sh. 3million to be able to send more than two teams to Kilifi.

The last time Vihiga County featured in the KYISA competition was in 2019 when the event was held in Busia County. The football team lost in the quarter finals.

“Our recent impressive performances in the Talanta Hela competitions showed that football has become part and parcel of the culture of Vihiga County, the reason why our opponents this year must brace themselves for a tough show from our team.”
